Volunteering in Ukraine
In Ukraine, there is an ancient tradition of social work, mutual aid, and caring for one's neighbor. People who worked in this field were called public figures, altruists, benefactors, volunteers, etc., and since the end of the 20th century - volunteers.
Volunteer activity in Ukraine was officially recognized by the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dated December 10, 2003 "On approval of the Regulation on volunteer activity in the field of social services". In 2011, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the law "On volunteering", and this resolution became invalid.
The first powerful surge of volunteering in Ukraine was associated with the 2012 European Football Championship. The next surge, caused by the Euromaidan events and the war in eastern Ukraine, had an unprecedented scale and reached its peak in 2014. In addition, Ukrainian volunteers are engaged in education, prevention of harmful habits and negative social phenomena, organization of leisure time for children and youth, social and legal protection of the needy and various other work.
Volunteers can work, in particular, at the Centers of Social Services for Family, Children and Youth (CSSSDM) and at various public associations. The largest group of volunteers are students of senior classes and secondary special institutions, students of a higher school. Volunteers are also parents, pensioners and specialists who provide various types of social services free of charge.
The role of volunteering in the social sphere is recognized at the state level, which is confirmed in separate legislative documents, in particular in the laws of Ukraine "On social work with families, children and youth", "On social services", in which the voluntary work of volunteers is recognized as necessary and socially useful.
Since 2015, volunteer networks began to develop in Ukraine, which united volunteers from different cities and of different ages. The largest of them is the Volunteer Community, which unites more than 5,000 volunteers from 21 cities of Ukraine. Currently, the volunteer movement in Ukraine is entering another phase. Volunteer and charitable organizations have developed professionally in the direction of working with volunteers and offer programs that provide for different stages of work with each volunteer individually, starting with the reception of volunteers, definition of roles and activities, formulation of goals, tasks and success criteria of activities, training and supervision of volunteers. It is worth noting that now volunteering is not considered as an exclusively altruistic intention of expressing will, volunteering is increasingly considered as a means for development, socialization, positioning, influence and obtaining new knowledge, acquaintances and skills.
